This derives from the convergence in the late 1980's of hypertext technologies and postmodern critical theory. Its chief exponents are Jay David Bolter [Bolter1991], George Landow ([Landow1989], [Landow1992]), and Richard Lanham [Lanham1993]. For a useful, if insufficiently critical overview, consult [Snyder1996].
The theory as advanced in these works deals with writing in general and hypertext writing particular. It lacks direct applicability to the domain of scholarly communication and has little specific interpretive power. It was therefore rejected.
