Hypermedia Online Publishing: the Transformation of the Scholarly Journal

14.3.7 Roles of providing access and archives

I agree that the library case-study items about how to define publishing and whether publishing includes archiving are appropriate for publishers, particularly as both publishers and libraries grapple with who should perform such functions in an environment without physical artefacts. The examiner's suggested questions are an excellent starting point for such a study. A brief initial comment: the examiner asks "If publishers are reluctant to archive e-journals, why? There is no evidence here." One of my respondents who was associated with the beginnings of Project Muse and who now works for a commercial publisher commented as part of our interview that (in her view) publishers would only archive if it contributed to the bottom line.
